The 2012
Central Virginia Battlefields Trust annual meeting promises to be an
exciting one. The annual meeting events will be held April 27-29.
Because of the huge success of last year’s expanded format, we will
again include activities on Friday afternoon and evening. For
Friday, we are planning a tour of the Cedar Mountain Battlefield led
by NPS Historian Greg Mertz followed by a tour of Kelly’s Ford,
where Major John Pelham was killed. Greg and CVBT Board Member Bud
Hall will be our guides. We will enjoy a barbecue dinner at the
historic
Inn at Kelly’s Ford with J.E.B.
Stuart IV providing a presentation on his famous ancestor entitled,
“Jeb Stuart, The Making of the Man: The Pre-War Years.”
Saturday’s tour,
led by Bud Hall, will focus on Brandy Station with visits to two
antebellum homes: Auburn and Rose Hill. Auburn, built in 1855-56 for
James A Beckham is a Greek revival structure which saw significant
action during the Battle. Auburn is included in the Virginia
Landmarks Register, as one of the Commonwealth’s precious
historic resources. It has also been entered into the National
Register of Historic Places. Rose Hill,
built in 1810, was Brig. General Judson Kilpatrick's HQ for five
months during the winter of 1863-1864. It has been wonderfully
restored by descendants of the original owners.
Our dinner and
annual meeting will take place Saturday at the Country Inn (see
below). As usual, we will enjoy drinks and camaraderie prior to
dinner and will again be conducting a silent auction of donated
items. So bring your check books! Noted author, historian, and CVBT
Board Member Robert K. Krick will be providing an insightful and
entertaining program entitled “Some Amazing and Amusing Anecdotes
from the Early Days of Battlefield Preservation around
Fredericksburg."
Sunday’s events
will begin with breakfast and a tour at the
White
Oak Museum. NPS Chief Historian John Hennessy claims, “The
White Oak Museum is perhaps the greatest locally-oriented collection
of Civil War artifacts in the country.” In 2011 the Museum
received the Civil War Trust’s Discovery Trail Site of the Year
Award. This world class museum will be a treat for all. Later that
morning, led by NPS Historian Eric Mink, we will tour the grounds of
historic Brompton, the war time home of John Marye. With a
commanding view atop atop Marye’s Heights, Brompton is the home of
the President of the University of Mary Washington and this is a
rare opportunity to visit this important landmark.
