Bearss Dinner A Smashing Success

On the evening of November 30, seven guests were treated to a memorable evening with the incomparable Ed Bearrs at the Sentry Box, a meticulously restored 18th century private residence in downtown Fredericksburg which was heavily damaged during the Battle of Fredericksburg. Beginning with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, the group enjoyed a special tour of the beautifully decorated house conducted by owner and longtime CVBT supporter Charles McDaniel. During the tour, Ed provided interesting commentary on different aspects of both the Civil and Revolutionary Wars germane to the Sentry Box and the area. During an elegant dinner, the group enjoyed hearing stories of Ed’s old Park Service days, particularly those related to his association with former Presidents Johnson and Carter.   As a remembrance of the special gathering, each guest received a presentation copy of Ed’s new book, Receding Tide: Vicksburg and Gettysburg which Ed personally signed for each guest. Also an 8 X 10 photo with Ed as well as a group photo taken by Central Virginia Battlefields Trust Board member Tom Van Winkle were given to all who attended.

We wish to thank Ed Bearrs for not only making this event a huge success, but for everything he tirelessly does for battlefield preservation. Thanks also to our host and hostess, Charles and Mary Wynn McDaniel, who opened up their lovely home during this busy holiday season. And thanks to our guests, we were able to raise $14,000 for the preservation of more “dirt and grass”!
