About The Event

Civil War historian Eric J. Wittenberg will lead a bus tour following Sheridan's Second Raid and the Battle of Trevilian Station that occurred June 7-25, 1864. Beginning at the time of the siege of Petersburg, this campaign resulted in a desperate fight to preserve Confederate supply lines from Union Cavalry. It marked the meteoric rise of Confederate General Wade Hampton, almost resulted in a premature last stand by George Custer, and generally is one of the most blatantly contradictory engagements according to both Union and Confederate final reports. This is the campaign where Phil Sheridan reported nearly forty percent of his troops becoming casualties without achieving their objective. This tour will break new ground by going over recently preserved battlefield land previously unavailable to tour groups.
